Delivery Service

YRL makes weekly deliveries of purchased materials, interlibrary loans and circulating collections to member public libraries.

YRL makes delivery on demand of purchased materials, interlibrary loans, circulating collections, and curriculum support materials to member school libraries.

The general van run calendar information is linked above. For more information about delivery at your local library, please contact Wendy Sears Ilnicki .

All YRL libraries that currently use the Alberta Government Delivery (Courier) Service

Please continue to send and receive interlibrary loans via government courier as you are presently doing. YRL cannot transport all interlibrary loans items on the van run, we need you to continue using the Government Courier system. Everything that goes on the Government Courier must be correctly labelled! You cannot send items with only book flags attached. YOU MUST have complete address labels on every package going through Government Courier including blue bags or individual boxes.

Procedures for YRL Pickup & Delivery at Public Libraries

The YRL delivery van makes deliveries at least once a week at your public library. At the time of delivery, there are a number of types of items that may be exchanged:

To facilitate the delivery process, YRL provides a comprehensive master schedule of delivery dates at the top of this page. Please have materials to be picked up ready to go as the driver is on a tight schedule. These items will be packaged in the regular YRL blue bins or for special collections such as story time kits or aboriginal kits other packaging may be used.

Interlibrary Loans

Before running your library’s hold report, have your shipping bins open and your various flags at hand.
Run your holds request report and gather the items you are ready to send out.

Insert the appropriate flag into the item. To help YRL staff later with the sorting of these items, please use the following procedures:

For TRAC member libraries -Insert the correct TRAC book flag with the Library’s agency code/Regional library code pointing upwards in the item. Please make sure you are using the right flag for the right item.

For libraries outside of TRAC - Date Due Flags should accompany interlibrary loans that are going outside of TRAC, e.g.: to all those libraries that are not on the TRACDynix system. This includes all libraries that are not members of Peace, Northern Lights, Marigold or Yellowhead.
Please note that you need to include on the date due flag:

  • The name/national library code of the library borrowing the item for their patron
  • The name and address of your own library that is lending the item
  • The expected due date for the item to be returned to your library

The reason for this flag is so library staff at all organizations can easily see where an item is being shipped to, when it is due back and to which library to return the item. The use of these flags will really expedite the interlibrary loan process.

Place all items into the shipping bins.
You can place 25 to 30 items in each bin without making the bins too heavy for the drivers. If the books are all paperbacks, you can place even more of them in the bin as paperbacks are light. If you have a number of items going to the same library, please but them all together in the bin as it eases sorting once the items get to headquarters. The books should be laid flat and stacked on top of each other with the “book” flags all in one direction for ease of sorting.

Note: AV materials should be wrapped in bubble wrap or similar packaging to avoid breakage. DVD cardboard mailers are available for purchase from YRL.
Contact yrlsupply@yrl.ab.ca for pricing information.

Continue to fill bins as necessary, close lids and leave in location for pickup by the driver. When the driver comes for the next delivery, he will drop off bins with interlibrary loans for your library. Once you have emptied those bins, you can refill them with interlibrary loans for the next pickup. If you need extra bins, please let the driver know and he will ensure you get some more. If you run out of bins, you may substitute a sturdy box of the same size.

Procedures for YRL Delivery On-Demand at School Libraries

The YRL delivery van picks up and delivers on-demand at each member school library. A delivery is made only when there is a significant number of items to be delivered or picked up from a school site. Books or other items weighing less than five kg. will now be mailed out to the school library. Books that need to be returned to YRL via the mail will have postage return labels included with the books.

Please follow the directions for delivery on demand. You must fill out a delivery on demand form in order to receive a delivery. Items that can be sent via delivery on-demand are:
