eReaders

The Guide to eReaders contains information on eReading devices current to October 2011.  Print and distribute it to your library patrons.

Best Practices
Client Services has put together a list of best practices for the circulation of eReader devices. These best practices were compiled from libraries currently circulating eReaders. Feel free to print the PDF version of the eReader Best Practices

collections
  • Load eReader with free (public domain) titles, these will remain on the eReader and will not expire.
  • If you have multiple eReaders, consider downloading free titles according to popular genres and assigning a genre to each eReader (i.e. Mystery or Romance).
  • Display the list of free titles on each eReader for your library patrons to see.
  • Download books from OverDrive at point of checkout, so that library patrons have maximum time to read the OverDrive title.

Loaning eReaders

  • Ask library members to sign a contract agreeing to higher late fees and/or higher replacement costs before loaning eReader.  
  • Ask that library members do not plug eReaders into their home computers or try downloading titles themselves.
  • Purchase a wall outlet adaptor plug for your eReader so that library members do not plug eReaders into their home computers.

Extending your eReader's life

  • Purchase screen protectors for your eReaders.
  • Purchase a case for each of your eReaders.
  • Consider raising or creating late fees for eReaders. 

eReader Lending Agreement
This sample agreement can be customized to meet your library's needs.  The following alterations are recommended:
  • Insert your library logo or library name at the top.
  • Take a look at the loan period and fines.  If you would like to alter them please do so.
  • If you purchase a cover or wall charger please add the additional charges as a point.
  • If you are not purchasing a cover and wall charger please remove them from the checklist at the bottom.
